Mermaid and dolphin fountains

The mermaid and dolphin fountains at Trafalgar Square in London are memorials to the Royal Navy officers Jellicoe and Beatty. The fountains were originally created in the mid-19th century without the sculptures. The intention of creating the fountains at that time was to occupy the space in Trafalgar Square so as to prevent the gathering of demonstrators and rioters. The finished sculptures were revealed in 1948
